700 Days at Pettysave

Story story

Once upon a time

In a land of myth and a time of magic…

Okay, Cut!!!

Let’s try this again. 😂

This is me 🤓

Late 2015, I got accepted into Covenant University to study Mass Communication. At the time, I was very confused about what I wanted to do with my life, career-wise.

All I knew was that I wanted to write, and succeed at it. I made a friend who shared a similar love for writing and we spent much of our time sharing sob stories about our seeming lack of direction.

Neither of us were sure of what we wanted to do, Mass Communication didn’t feel like it, but there we were, stuck in something we couldn’t make heads or tails of.

Fast forward to May 2019, many clarity sessions, stress eating, writing club meetings and mental breakdowns later, I dropped the pen in my final exams as a Mass Communication student — specialising in Public Relations and Advertising — and said goodbye to undergraduate studies for good.

I made my way home with all my school luggage and spent the next few weeks preparing for convocation.

While at home, I got a call from a senior friend who knew about my writing and communication background. He asked me if I could take on a job as a content developer. I said yes and he encouraged me to apply for the open role at Pettysave. I applied without thinking much of it and got an interview invite. I was a writer but I had never written anything for finance or tech.

The nerves set in and I spent some time researching the company, its value propositions and everything I could find online to prepare me to excel at the interview and subsequently the job, if I got it.

Spoiler alert — I got the job! 💃🏽

Well, something funny happened on my interview day. Can you imagine that my pencil skirt actually tore open on my way to the office? It was too late to go back home and change so I side-walked into the room, apologising for my wardrobe dysfunction and silently ranting at my non-existent village people.

That was the day I met my soon-to-be boss, the coolest tech bro I know, Abel Adejoh — Pettysave’s Co-founder and CEO, who got the business idea from a savings box he tweeted about on the last day of 2015.

One of the rare pictures of Abel that exists 😅

On the 1st of July 2019 and with zero experience, I started my journey as a Content Developer on the very small Pettysave team — curating, writing and publishing content on how to manage money well towards financial freedom — and how Pettysave wants to help people do just that.

From content for social media, email marketing and blogging to website and mobile app, I wrote my heart out to our then, less than 3500 customers.

Mid 2019

At the time, Pettysave was not very known, people were skeptical about putting their money and there was always a thin line between whether or not a customer would take to twitter dragging for every issue arising.

I asked Abel a lot of questions, most of my colleagues knew me because I asked them too and I bullied many people into buying me food while I was at it…And no, I am not sorry. 😌

As for my fiction writing, I finished my first book in my 4 years of university and 5 days after starting work at Pettysave, I launched my first official novel.

And what blew my mind was that everyone from work showed up and out for me! That was when I truly knew that this was home.

A shot from my book launch

Cut to July 19, 2019, I became a university graduate and from November 2019 to November 2020, I served my fatherland with Pettysave, leveraging content to teach people basic finance management tips.

It was during this period that my eyes opened to new ways to monetize my writing and the possibilities of a career in brand communications.

Armed with this knowledge, I invested more in developing my communication skills, tech and finance knowledge. Thanks to a very enabling environment, I took several courses and practiced what I learnt on the job.

By July 2020, I transitioned into the Content Team Lead and in January 2021, I moved to the product team as a Research and Content Developer. But… communications remained on my mind.

In early 2021, a spot opened up in the marketing team for a Product Marketing Manager and I applied, with fingers crossed (lol).

Guess what? I got the job, again! 💃🏽

Today, we have processed N8 Billion ($16.7 million) in transactions and have also recorded a 1810% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2021! Along with a team of skilled engineers, product specialists, finance experts and growth managers, we are building out the future of money management for all our customers.

The team and I have grown from just writing and putting out content, to studying audience behaviour and working with all the units within Pettysave as well as 3rd party partners to give our customers the best Pettysave experience. It is amazing.

Day 700 in 2021

It’s been 700 awesome days working on this wonderful team and I am thankful for growth, the friends I’ve made along the way and all the great networks I’ve built.

So far, working at Pettysave in the past 22 months has been the most challenging and exciting time of my life.

I have learnt so much on personal finance, money management, savings, investments, brand communication, conflict resolution, people relations, operations, negotiation and being a tech bro in general.

Doesn’t matter that seeing lines of code gives me anxiety, I am still a tech bro…or sis, or whatever female tech bros are called (lol).

I don’t know what the future holds for me in the next 700 days, but I look forward to it with anticipation. I am grateful for the journey and I am excited for the new responsibilities and growth that await me and Pettysave.

Here’s to a greater future!
